"We must care for nature so that nature can care for us."

- Pope Francis

The idea to build this little cabin started during a cold, snowy weekend at a yurt in Cable, WI.  While staying at the yurt and training for the upcoming American Birkebeiner we began talking about how good we felt.  Skiing all day together in the Chequamegon National Forest, coming back to the yurt, warming up to a crackling fire in the woodstove, making a big meal and then sleeping soundly in a cozy bed while another 6 inches of snow fell outside.  It was heaven.  We began talking about how the yurt felt like an alpine ski hut.  Small, a natural extension of the surrounding forest, doing no harm to the environment.  And giving its guests a powerful sense of health and well being, making us feel fully alive.

Why "the Chickadee"?

The wisdom of certain North American indigenous cultures teach us that the Chickadee is a creature recognized for its ability to listen, to collaborate and to adapt.  Naturalist studies have revealed that Chickadees are highly social birds, known to be "memory geniuses" able to recognize each other and even individual people.  They undergo radical physical transformation to survive bitterly cold northern Minnesota winter nights, shivering to keep warm in the hallows of old cedar, pine & birch trees.  Chickadees symbolize community, awareness, resilience & joy.  To some people, these little birds serve as a metaphor for what is needed from each of us in the years ahead.  Reminding us of the importance of listening, working together, adapting and ultimately solving the problem of climate change, perhaps the most significant challenge humanity has ever faced.

"The measure of intelligence is the ability to change."

- Albert Einstein
